Description
Hello friends, my name is J.J. and I do culture videos.
I love learning about the culture that defines my life, and the lives of people in other places. I think we all need to live life with the right mix of skepticism and gratitude, and not take things too seriously. This is the attitude I try to bring to my videos, I hope you enjoy them! And I hope you help me learn stuff about where you're from!
Questions, comments? Email me at: [email protected]
Unfortunately I am no longer accepting mail from fans. I just get too much of it and my apartment is too small to store it all. To email me about something else, here's the address: [email protected]

Hello friends, so I'm trying something new. As you know, I like learning about different places, and I particularly like having conversations with people about where they're from, and hearing their personal insights on the culture and politics of the place they come from. So I have decided to try my hand at a podcast called WHERE YOU'RE FROM. My goal is to just ask people simple and direct questions about culture and politics, basically in the style of CSPAN podcasts, which are some of my favorites.
Here is a proof-of-concept pilot episode I made with my Youtuber friend
@RyanGeddie
from Texas. He is very insightful and articulate about his state. I realize this format might not be for everyone. It's not a super "conversational" podcast, and is more just about blunt questions and learning facts. Let me know what you think, and let me know if you have any ideas for other guests! I already got a few more lined up.

I recently bought the second Makeship plushie from my YouTuber pal Roman/NFKRS, depicting a Russian grandma, to go with his previous plushy depicting a Russian thug.
I’ve been thinking about doing another plushie. My first one, as you may recall, was of “Nanaimo Bear,” a character from my Canadamon book, based on a kind of Canadian desert treat. If I was to make another plushie, what do you think it should be? What would be a fun idea that you think would capture the vibe of my channel?
I realize plushies aren’t for everyone, but I know some people enjoy them a lot. As someone who is such a big fan of collectibles myself, I really like the idea of being able to make physical things that can serve as a symbol of my channel for fans of it.

Hey folks I did another interview with my friend Shawn! I think you guys might enjoy it, I talk a lot about my views on Canada’s ties to the monarchy, Canadian conservatism and elitism and even some foreign policy stuff. Check it out!

When it comes to “sponsored segments” (ie: ad reads) in YouTube videos (not mine in particular, but in general) l, which of these two statements is closest to your thinking?

As an American, that Taste of America section is perfect replica of gas station shopping. All it’s missing is a Hostess product

The greatest irony here is I want to try some of these “authentic” American foods but can’t get them in America.

"Hot dogs and french fries on pizza" sounds like a food that an american gradeschooler would invent if you asked them to make the ultimate food.

One of my favorite "American" meals was in China. My hotel had a restaurant called "The American Cafe". The menu was traditional Chinese food, but the decor was little American flags everywhere, and big blown out portraits of shlubby middle aged white guys in polo shirts.

The way he said "It was LIE!" so wholesomely excuses him for any false advertising for a Kentucky Fried Christmas

9:12 I think the funniest part about mentioning Scott Pilgrim is that the movie takes place in Canada

I can't help but find it funny they used "Scott Pilgrim vs The World" as evidence that the American Party Cup is just as American as it gets, considering that series takes place in Toronto and only has one American character out of the dozens in it.

As a Mexican, hearing you say “ooo puto” was both confusing and hilarious

8:05 as a German I have to defend the "Amerikaner" at our Backeries. It is actually not supposed to be an American snack but the name derives from the Ammonium bicarbonate which is used as a leavening agent in process of making the snack. Ammonoium bicarbonate bread were not rolling of the tongue very well so bakeries gave it the nickname "Am(monium)erikaner"

Honestly for me, at least out in California. The red solo cup is 100% authentic Americana, I have never thrown a larger party or been to a larger "drinking" party without red solo cups in attendance. So, at least they got that right lol

This was fascinating. The foods seemed to be in two categories, either "This isn't american, but it kindof should be" and "why would anyone make that in the first place, and why blame it on us?"

Love how most of these 'American foods' would straight up disgust an actual American hahahaha reminds me of my Chinese friends' opinions of the 'Chinese food' chains here haha
