As a smoker and someone with pretty bad social anxiety, one of the best parts of smoking is the ability to go step outside for a moment;aka an excuse to leave the crowded room.

I picked up smoking when I was in the marines. It absolutely helped during the worst times of my deployment and was a way my guys and I bounded in a environment that normally people would become crazy.

as a long term smoker, I've always said that the physical habits we associate with smoking are far harder to break than the cravings. Fighting the cravings sucks, but it's nothing like opiates or something like that. The hardest part about quitting smoking is the routine. I Eat a meal, time to smoke, I just drove an hour, time to stop , get out, and smoke. Something feels missing from my fingers right now, etc. THAT is the hardest part to break.

For me it was the whole “ritual” of smoking. Pulling one out of a pack, lighting it with a zippo, letting the cigarette hang out of the corner of your mouth or having it in between your fingers when your doing something with your hands. It also stems from cigar smoking where you just relax and enjoy it, only now instead of enjoying a cigar for an hour or 2 it’s just 5-10 minutes at a time.

There is also the "having something to do" factor. In my opinion, cigarette smoking is basically one very cool looking fidget toy. You don't know what to do with your hands? Having a cigarette will take care of that. Don't really know how to leave a conversation? Just say you are going to smoke and people won't think much of it. You feel like you are looking dumb just sitting in a bench waiting for someone? Well, you can light a cigarette and sit on that same bench looking like a more badass version of yourself.
