I played with a root ball again, this time a holly, and it was a harrowing experience:

Splendid piece of art and craftsmanship, however, not recommended for the average wood-turner who values “two arms and a leg”

I give you a lot of credit, David, for not only turning what looked like a piece of junk into an incredible work of art, but also for sticking with this project through its myriad of frustrations and challenges. Job well done!

What an incredibly ambitious (and dangerous) project. What an amazing result. Glad you survived the ordeal, and I hope you were suitably compensated for that museum-piece!

An expert is not someone without flaws, but someone who overcomes them. Nice job.

OMG! From that gnarled up mess of roots & trash, after the hours of scraping, tooling, patching things up, it's turned into something so subtle, and yet so sublime. It looks so delicate or so strong, depending on the lighting. It's brilliants! I'm amazed!

When this started I was like oh man this is gonna be so interesting and then I saw the choice of colors for the body of the vase and I got skeptical but then as it all started to come together I was like "oh dang, this might actually be the most amazing vase I've ever seen in my entire life

Had a sense of feeling that this would be turned into a vase. Time+patience+skill+dedication= beauty of art

This project was so dynamic. I'm struck by the vitality of inanimate/dead things: the pigment settling to the bottom, the steel being sheared away by debris, the pulling away of the natural material from the synthetic; it's a living thing you're dealing with. And you gave it life.

This absolutely terrifies me watch you spin those types of logs. Amazing work, true inspiration
