Because they are supposed to be more fragile, gentle, cute, beautiful, etc.; so you don't expect (naturally) violence, terror, death comming from them. That increases the effect psychologically.

I want to see a movie done about the black-eyed children and make it a long movie where several people die. Like it would start like these people are going to survive and then boom dead. Then move to the next couple or lone person until you get one that is really close to being free of the curse only to pick up their kid and one of the black eyed children that was controlling their kid and boom dead bad guys wins.

I'm home alone....
