As much as I love this movie and this scene was intense there were two things I don't get. How could a little nothing hair pin break the ice that thick, but a solid heavy locomotive didn't? , and also, what the heck were all the other kids doing while this happened?

I never knew there was a train or a locomotive that can actually turn right or left. Normally, they go straight on one direction but here, it can turn either direction. I also never knew there were levers and gears that can make it possible, or at least, in the movie. That's extremely rare.
