When a great grandfather of mine was injured in the Civil War he was cared for by one of the Lee daughters.

During my work life I met a man that resembled Gen. Robert E. Lee physically. After working with him for some months, I expressed my observation and asked if he was in fact a descendent of the General?

Lee graduated 2nd from West Point in 1829, but he had no demerits, which I think is still the record for cadets.

It’s really interesting to learn about Robert E. Lee’s children — so many people know him as a general, but few realize the personal stories and struggles of his family. Thanks for sharing this history!

Thank you for an informative and respectful view into the Lee family, without political commentary.

My mother was engaged to Phillip Fitzgerald Lee III, a descendant of Robert E. Lee. A gentleman through and through. She died of cancer before being wed. His parents were the finest. Mr. Phil, as we called him, died in his families home, trying to save a family member in a house fire. He was burned severely and my sister and I held his hand at the last. Just writing this brings deep tears in my eyes. He was a kind gentle soul, very generous and loved especially his mother, Lorana Lee, who had dinner in the oven every night awaiting his arrival home. Thank you for this tribute to his family. I wish you could have met Mr. Phil. He was a true historian. My sister and I loved him and he morned my mother loss to the end.

I went to Arlington Cemetery in 1976 as part of a trip for the Bicentennial for the country. The pillars are huge. We couldn't get in because the house was being renovated and the furnishings being gathered.

My gg granddad was Joseph Howard Powell, and enlisted into the army in 1862. He was in Company H, 5th Alabama Cavalry and was in several battles, notably the battle of Chickamauga. Everything I've learned about him was through his grandson, my granddaddy Rupert Powell. At some point in time, Joe Howard was part of what was called the Gray Ghost Cavalry, fighting in several skirmishes. All of my folks on both sides of my family were born and raised in the South, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.

My wife is a Custis. There is a direct lineage to both the Custis and Lee families.
