Giraffe in the Discount Aviary
The zebra stood in the parking lot
of a 24-hour Kmart,
holding a sign that said
“Poems: $1 or Best Offer.”
I asked if it accepted
expired coupons.
It blinked its long lashes,
then wrote in the margin
of a stolen phonebook:
“Everything is negotiable
except the stripes.”
I gave it a nickel
and a half-eaten granola bar.
The zebra handed me
a receipt from 1987
with a single word:
“Yes.”
We stood there for years,
watching shopping carts
roll into the sunset
like faithful, rusted horses.
