Thunderbolt has the best "You didn't win" i think I've ever seen. Io basically says, "Yeah, you beat me, but you had to loose all of your arms and legs just to keep up with my gundam, and still lost the zaku in end." It's honestly a good thing the psycho zaku was destroyed. Beuase the natural end point is brains in jars piloting mobile suits.

An actual analysis that isn't just a summary

Daryl lost his body, fleming lost his mind to war. December Sky shows war as a terrifying meat grinder that robs you of your humanity. There are no winners, only survivors.

It's also interesting how in the manga after the war Daryl and Io are both left without homes but while Io seeks family through what he loves Daryl ends up finding a brotherhood out of those who only hate. Ironic as the war both destroyed them but Io is the one who recovered.

After the war they both dont go back to normal life they cling to the war that changed them inreversibly and spar again

7:46 i love how they had daryl realise what he has lost and become at the end of the 1st season, yes he now has the honor of being someone who has beaten down a proper gundam model with capable pilot, a feat not many can claim, but in his case this came at a great cost, and of all poeple its io who gives him that wake up call, the person who knows exactly what he himself is, and what his rival has now also become.

If you read the manga, this isn’t even the beginning of their stories. I’m on book 22 and by this point their roles have reversed. At least to me, I’m on Io Flemming’s side now.
