I practiced and learned on curbside weed eaters your common string trimmers that people throw out for curbside pickup everyday yes they have small ports so they are a little tricky but you can do them with a dremel and small bits very cheap get yourself a timing wheel off from eBay a drill chuck to bolt it to the drill Chuck will easily go over your crankshaft a 3/8 will work but I bought a half inch so it would fit just about every chainsaw also.
