Nationalist Congress Party founder Sharad Pawar on Wednesday, 28 January, issued a statement on the untimely demise of his nephew and Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar.
“Ajit Pawar’s untimely death is a massive shock to Maharashtra. The state has today lost a capable and decisive leader. The loss that has occurred cannot be compensated, but not everything is in our hands.
I wasn’t planning to come before the media today, but I learned that some media outlets have taken a stance from Kolkata suggesting that there is some politics behind this accident. But there is no politics in this; it is purely an accident. The agony of this death is felt by Maharashtra, by all of us. Please do not bring politics into this. That’s all I have to say,” he said.

Captains Sumit Kapur and Shambhavi Pathak, the pilots who were flying the ill-fated aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, were among the five people who died in the plane crash on Wednesday, 28 January.
The pilots were operating a Learjet 45 (LJ45) from Mumbai to Baramati when the small aircraft plumetted just before landing at around 8:45 am on Wednesday. The aircraft was owned by VSR Ventures.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that a proper investigation will be conducted into the circumstances that led to the crash.
"Before landing, ATC asked the pilot whether the runway was in sight, and he confirmed it was not. After a go-around, the aircraft returned to land, and the pilot was again asked if the runway was visible for landing. Then, the pilot confirmed visibility of the runway. After ATC cleared landing, it was seen that the accident had occurred," he said.

| One may not have been a staunch supporter of Ajit Pawar, and may have disagreed with some of his political decisions, but one common perception across Maharashtra’s political spectrum was this: "Ajit Dada had the potential to be the chief minister."
As is often the case with political leaders described as "grassroots leaders," the term was central to Pawar’s political identity. It was, in many ways, the very foundation of his public life.
The political legacy he leaves behind is best understood by tracing it back to his grassroots in Baramati — a region where his politics was born and where it tragically ended on 28 January. Eshwar writes.
